The Black-crowned night-heron – Nycticorax nycticorax is a mid-sized heron of the wading-bird Family Ardeidae and the Order Pelecaniformes. It is widespread around the warm and temperate parts of the world apart from Australia. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder to the more northerly parts namely Turkey, S Caucasus, Iran, Iraq, and the Maghreb states. There are small isolated summer breeding areas in S Levant, Central Saudi Arabia and UAE. The Nile Delta is a wintering area but from there southwards to Ethiopia is a broadening range where it is resident and from where it spreads westwards across the S of the Sahel states to coastal Mauritania.
