Black tern

The Black tern – Chlidonias niger is a small migratory Marsh tern of Type – seabird, the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. It is a summer breeder to inland freshwater marshes of Eurasia and N America but migrates to winter off the tropical coasts of S America and Africa. In the AWB region it is a summer breeder to the South Caucasus, and is found on passage across Turkey and the coastal Levant to the whole of the Mediterranean Sea and close coastal areas. Exceptionally, its only inland wintering area is in the Nile valley from middle Egypt to N Sudan. The main migration route passage continues along the NW African coast to winter southwards from from Dakar to South Africa.

Winter Habitat - typically tropical coasts but sometimes major rivers,
