The Common scoter – Melanitta nigra is a large Palearctic diving sea duck of Type – waterbird, Family Anatidae and Order Anseriformes. It is a summer breeder to far N of Eurasia and winters close inshore to NE Atlantic coastlines from N Norway to S Western Sahara. In the AWB Region it is a winter visitor to the Atlantic coastlines of Morocco and Western Sahara.

Type - waterbird - nests in Tundra or woodland close to the sea or wetlands,
Summer Habitat - Tundra and far N woodlands close to sea coast or wetlands, rarely inland, 
Winter Habitat - inshore temperate Atlantic coastlines, estuaries, sheltered bays, gregarious in favorable spots,
