The Common tern – Sterna hirundo is a medium sized tern of Type – seabird with a worldwide distribution and is found in the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. It breeds in a wide range of habitats near water across N America and Eurasia, it is strongly migratory into the tropics and S Hemisphere in S America S Africa and the islands of SE Asia down to N and E Australia. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder to Turkey, South Caucasus, N, E and S Iran, Palestine, Iraq and Kuwait. It is found on passage across the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent coastlines, the Atlantic coast of Morocco, the Red Sea and bordering coasts. It winters offshore of SE Iran, and off the coasts of Africa S of Eritrea and Yemen in E Africa and in W Africa south of Western Sahara.
