The Eurasian spoonbill – Platalea leucorodia is a medium/large wading-bird of the Family Threskiornithidae and the Order Pelecaniformes. It is found across the warmer parts of Eurasia, being a summer breeder from Spain to Korea. In Europe it is sparsely distributed, but from E of the Black Sea to Korea its summer breeding range is continuous, in the winter it migrates S to SE Asia, India, the Middle East and N Africa where it also joins various dispersed resident populations. In the AWB Region there are a few small summer breeding areas in Azerbaijan and Turkey. There are distributed resident areas in Turkey, Iran, S Iraq, the Jeddah coastal area of KSA, the Red Sea coast of Sudan S to the Horn of Africa and Socotra. and the SW corner of Mauritania. Finally there are widely distributed wintering areas in Turkey. the Levant, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, the Maghreb states, W Sahara, Mali, Niger and Chad.
