The Lesser crested tern – Thalasseus bengalensis is a medium sized tern of Type-seabird, the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. It is found in subtropical and tropical areas of the Old World in three widely distributed subspecies. The first two are found in the AWB Region and the third one is in Indonesia and N Australia. Species one is a late summer breeder to offshore islands of Libya and outside the breeding season is found offshore of N and W Africa from Libya to Guinea. The second subspecies is found in the N Indian Ocean particularly breeding along the coasts of the Red Sea and the coasts of the Indian subcontinent and with a small breeding population in Bahrain and Qatar. Outside of the breeding season they can be found more widely dispersed over the N and W Indian Ocean down to Madagascar and S Africa.
