The Northern Lapwing – Vanellus vanellus is a species of Type – Wader of the family Charadriidae and the Order Charadriiformes. Its summer breeding range is widely spread across Temperate Eurasia. It is resident in W Europe, but the migratory birds winter on the fringes of the the Mediterranean Sea and similar latitudes across Asia. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder in the South Caucasus and bordering NE Turkey, this merges into a resident population across Central and E Turkey into NW Iran. It is largely a winter visitor across W and S Turkey, N Iran, Cyprus, The Levant and the Fertile Crescent into SW Iran. In N Africa it is a winter visitor to the Nile Valley, N Egypt and suitable habitats across N Libya to the Maghreb states coastal plains along the Atlantic seaboard to the Canary Islands.
