The Purple heron – Ardea purpurea is a large wading-bird of the Family Ardeidae and the Order Pelecaniformes. It is widespread over the Old World. It is a summer breeder to S Europe to Central Asia with an outlier in NE China that migrates S in the winter. The population in s s Africa, the Indian s Continent, S and SE Asia is largely resident. In the AWB Region there are distributed small areas of summer breeding in the Maghreb states, Turkey, S Caucasus, W Iran S E Iraq and Central Saudi Arabia. There are also a few wintering areas in the Egyptian Nile Valley and the coastal regions of the states in the S Arabian Gulf.
