The Red-necked phalarope – Phalaropus lobatus is a small migratory Holarctic wader of the family Scolopacidae. It is a summer breeder all around the Arctic and is very unusual as a wader for it migrates to winter offshore at sea in just a few Tropical ocean areas worldwide, usually in areas of upwelling currents that give a good food supply. In the AWB Region we are very lucky to have one of these areas of upwelling in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman.
