The Roseate tern – Sterna dougallii is a small/medium sized, largely tropical tern of Type – seabird, the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. It is a summer breeder on the east coast of N America from Nova Scotia to Long Island and off the west coast of Europe in UK Ireland and islands further south such as the Azores and the Canary Islands. Elsewhere it breeds in SW coastal India, Sri Lanka and small islands in the East China Sea. In the AWB Region it is found outside of the breeding season around the coast of Oman from the Gulf of Oman in the north to the border with Yemen in the south west. There is also a resident population on the coastal strip of E Africa from S Somalia to southern Tanzania with an adjacent offshore range which extends around the SW Indian Ocean islands including Madagascar, the Seychelles and is also resident in the Comoros, Mauritius and Reunion.
