The Striated heron – Butorides striata or Green-backed heron is a small heron of the Wading-bird Family Ardeidae and the Order Pelecaniformes. It is widely distributed around the world and is largely Resident but has a Migratory population which is a summer breeder over E China, Korea and SE Russia. In the AWB Region it is resident around the Straits of Hormuz and the adjacent coasts of Iran, UAE and Oman, plus Dhofar and the coasts of the Red Sea. It is resident over s s Africa where suitable habitat is to be found.

Type - Wading-bird - normally solitary
Summer Habitat - small wetlands, marshes, rivers, lakes, nest on a large pile of sticks usually near the ground
Resident Habitat - agricultural fields, rice-fields, mangroves, mudflats, canals, ditches, ponds
