Water pipit – Anthus spinoletta – is a small migratory/resident Eurasian passerine of Type – insectivore, Family Motacillidae and Order Passeriformes. It has a very wide range and is found from NW Africa to E China, but it has a very complex pattern of populations, migratory and resident over its whole range. In Europe and the Middle East it favours the mountainous areas as Resident with altitudinal movements. In E Asia the pattern is clear as migratory with summer breeding to the N and wintering in SE and S Asia. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder to E Turkey, with small areas in S Caucasus, NW Iran and N Iraq. It is resident in areas of Central Turkey, the S Caucasus and N Iran. It is found wintering around the Mediterranean, Arabia, and the N Middle East.
