West African crested tern – Thalasseus albididorsalis – is a large resident/partially-migratory African tern of Type – seabird, Family Laridae and Order Charadriiformes. It was previously considered a sub-species of the New World- Royal tern – Thalasseus maximus, further details of which can be found on the Categories card – Vagrants – It is found along the W Coast of Africa from Morocco to Angola and is resident from the S of Western Sahara to Nigeria. In the AWB Region it is a winter visitor to the coasts of Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania, but is also found as resident in S Western Sahara and Mauritania.
