Whimbrel

The Whimbrel – (Numenius phaeopus) is a largish Wader of the family Scolopacidae. It has a Holarctic distribution wintering south to Tropical coastlines worldwide. In the AWB Region it is noticeable on passage in the S Caucasus, Iran, Turkey, Cyprus, N Syria, N and E Iraq, the Levant, Sinai, N Red Sea coastline of Saudi Arabia south to Mecca, The Red Sea coastline of Egypt, and the whole of the Mediterranean coastline of N Africa. It is a winter visitor around the coastline of Arabia south from Mecca to the Arabian Gulf and the S coast of Iran. It is also a winter visitor along the eastern seaboard of Africa from N Sudan to S Somalia and on the W coast from S Mauritania to Gibraltar straights, with an unusual non-coastline wintering area in Central Mali.
