The White-winged tern – Chlidonias leucopterus is a small species of Marsh tern of Type – seabird, the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. It is strongly migratory and has a very extensive range across The Old World and Australasia. They are summer breeders in freshwater marshes from eastern Europe to Central Asia but are absent across Mongolia but re-occur in the Far East. In the AWB Region they breed in the South Caucasus and southern Iraq, and are found on passage across Turkey and the Middle East. They winter in coastal areas of N Africa from Morocco to Egypt from where it is also found in E Egypt to the Red Sea and into all of Sub-Saharan Africa except The Horn of Africa down to W Madagascar and South Africa.
