Common pochard

The Common pochard (Aythya ferina) is a medium sized diving duck. It has an extensive breeding range from Northern Europe to Eastern Siberia. It has a wide wintering range, South to more Temperate areas extending into the Northern Tropics. In the AWB Region it has a small Summer breeding range in Eastern Turkey and several small dispersed areas where it is resident in Turkey, the South Caucasus and NW Iran, Elsewhere it is a winter visitor to the Southern Caspian shores of Azerbaijan and Iran, the Fertile Crescent and bordering Southern Iran, West and South Turkey and Cyprus. In Africa it winters along the coastal regions from the West of Morocco across the Maghreb coasts to Egypt down the Nile Valley to Northern Kenya. There are also a few wintering areas across the Sahel.
