The Great egret – Ardea alba is a large heron of the wading-bird Family Ardeidae and of the Order Pelecaniformes. It is a cosmopolitan bird found over all the warmer areas of the world. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder only E and SE Iran. Its wintering range includes Turkey, S Caucasus, Central and S Iraq, the Levant, the Nile Valley of Egypt and N Tunisia. It is resident in, a few small areas of Central Turkey, the Mediterranean coast of N Africa, and the southern end of the Sahel states, Eritrea, Djibouti, and NW & S parts of Somalia.

Summer Habitat - large range of natural, artificial and coastal wet habitats, avoids deserts, 
Resident Habitat - wetland margins, aquaculture ponds, coastal lagoons, mangroves. tidal flats,
