The Great white pelican – Pelecanus onocrotalus is a very large water-bird of the Family Pelecanidae and the Order Pelecaniformes. It has both a migratory breeding population distributed from SE Europe to Central Asia, and resident populations in sub Saharan Africa and the NW Indian sub-continent, and is found widely on Passage across SE Europe, the Levant and W and S Asia, to wintering areas in Africa and NW and NE Indian sub-continent. In the AWB Region there are summer Breeding Areas in Turkey, S Levant and the S Caucasus. The main wintering areas are right across and S of the Sahel States, and around the Red Sea coasts, there are also a few smaller areas in S Iraq, and SW and E Iran. There is a resident population in coastal Mauritania.
