The Grey heron – Ardea cinerea is a large Old World wading-bird of the Family Ardeidae and the Order Pelecaniformes. It is widely distributed over Eurasia and Africa. It is an extensive summer visitor across Temperate Eurasia but is more resident across SE Asia and s s Africa. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder to E Iran. There are isolated areas across Tukey, S Caucasus and N Iran where there are small resident populations. In addition there are also resident populations in coastal Western Sahara and Morocco, E Egypt, E Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia, and across the southern ends of all the Sahel states in between. There are wintering areas in the coastal Maghreb states, N Egypt, W Turkey, Cyprus, The Levant, SE Iraq, Kuwait and the S coastal areas of Iran.
