The Squacco heron – Ardeola ralloides is a small heron of the wading-bird Family Ardeidae and Order Pelecaniformes. It is an Old World species and is thinly spread over S Europe up to the the main summer breeding range from Rumania to Uzbekistan. It migrates S, mostly to s s Africa. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder to the Maghreb states, the Levant, Turkey, the South Caucasus, NW and SW Iran, SE Iraq and Central Saudi Arabia. There is a wintering population in the Egyptian N Nile Valley and a resident population in S Iraq. The main African resident population starts across the S areas of all the Sahel states.

Type - wading bird - small colonies,
Breeding Habitat  - warm marshy wetlands, nest on base of sticks in dense shrubs or trees,
Wintering Habitat - fresh water marshes, lakes, ponds, rice fields with available dense vegetation cover.
