Gull-billed tern

The Gull-billed tern – Gelochelidon nilotica is a medium sized Worldwide migratory tern of Type – seabird of the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. In the AWB region it is a widely dispersed summer breeder in the coastal areas of NW Africa from Mauritania across the Maghreb states to NW Libya. It is also a summer breeder in Turkey, the South Caucasus and N & E Iran with a small population around the NW head of the Arabian Gulf from Kuwait into coastal Iran. It also winters along the N coast of the Arabian Gulf from Kuwait to India. In winter it is found along the coasts of NE Africa from Egypt to Tanzania and also along the full length of the Nile valley. There are a few inland wintering areas in S Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Chad.
