Mourning wheatear – Oenanthe lugens – is a larger partially migratory Afro-Asian wheatear of Type – sallyer, Family Muscicapidae and Order Passeriformes. It ranges across N Africa, the Middle East and Iran. In the AWB Region it is a summer breeder at the eastern end of its range from SE Turkey right across Iran, this population winters on the Arabian side of the Arabian Gulf from S Iraq and nearby Iran to the Straits of Hormuz, but mostly in central KSA. It is resident in the S Levant, Syria, S Jordan and NW KSA, and E Egypt. In N Africa it has a resident patchwork of areas in the N of Libya and the Maghreb states. Although resident overall a few birds are partially nomadic in the Sahara at this time.
