The Common redshank – Tringa totanus is a noisy medium sized migratory Palearctic wader of the family Scolopacidae, more often heard before it is seen. It is a summer breeder to wetlands across Temperate Eurasia and in winter migrates to the Subtropics and Tropics of the Old World. There are some smaller more temperate areas to the south of the summer range where it has become resident. In the AWB Region we have a patchwork of all three types of behaviour. We have summer breeders in NE Turkey, the South Caucasus and NW Iran. In W Turkey and E Tunisia we have resident populations and elsewhere in the region the birds are only winter visitors.
