The Sandwich tern – Thalasseus sandvicensis is a medium sized tern of Type-seabird, the family Laridae and the Order Charadriiformes. It is a summer breeder to the Palearctic Region, mostly concentrated in the west, around the coast of NW Europe and in the east, around the northern shores of the Black and Caspian Seas. In the AWB Region it winters along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea and S Turkey, offshore Cyprus and the Levant coasts, the Arabian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Mekran coast and the southern coasts of Oman and Yemen. Off Africa it winters offshore in the Mediterranean and all along the NW coast of Africa down to Nigeria, then there is a gap until Gabon when wintering continues down to South Africa.
