The Smew – Mergellus albellus is a small Palearctic diving duck of Type – waterbird, Family Anatidae and Order Anseriformes. It is a summer breeder to the N Taiga regions of Palearctic Eurasia, and winters in costal SE Asia, W Europe and N Middle East. In the AWB Region small isolated wintering areas are found in Turkey, Iraq, S Caucasus and the coastal areas of the S Caspian Sea.
