The Anhingidae – Darters+ or Anhingidae – Anhingas / Darters are a family of large long necked water birds, sometimes called Snakebirds, of the Order Suliformes, they are of Type – waterbird. Under current terminology, the term Anhinga refers to the New World species and Darter refers to the Old World species, they are all in the single genus Anhinga of the Family, and are typically fresh water birds of the Tropics, although a few are found in brackish estuaries and mangroves and get their local name of snakebird from their habit of swimming with their body submerged and only their long neck above the water.
