The Gadwall (Mareca strepera) is a dabbling duck widespread across the Holarctic Region. In the AWB Region its wintering grounds are found along the Maghreb States coastal plains, The Nile Valley into Ethiopia, Western Turkey, Iran, Southern Iraq and Arabian Gulf coastal areas. There is a small area in Central Turkey which has a small resident population.

The Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata) is a distinctive dabbling duck with a large spatulate bill. It has an extremely extensive Holarctic range, and is strongly migratory across most of its range except for few small areas in suitable Temperate Zones where resident populations can be found.

The Garganey (Spatula querquedula) is a small dabbling duck which breeds right across Temperate Eurasia. It is strongly migratory to three main areas 1 Central Africa and the Nile Valley, 2 the Indian subcontinent and 3 SE Asia and the islands across to Indonesia, The Philippines and Papua New Guinea. A small number also overwinter around the coasts of the Arabian Gulf.

The Cotton pygmy-goose – Nettapus coromandelianus – or Cotton Teal is one of the smallest waterfowl in the world and is widely distributed across the Old World. Its range extends Eastwards from Syria across Southern Asia to the Far East and as far as NE Coasts of Australia. There is also a subspecies widespread across sub Saharan Africa. Previously they were classed as ‘perching ducks’ from their habit of perching high up in trees.

The Common shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) resembles a small short necked goose and breeds across the Temperate Palearctic area. In the AWB Region it is mostly a Winter Visitor except for the Southern Caucasus and Southern Iran where there are areas of summer breeding. It has wintering grounds in the Southern Caucasus, Southern Iraq, Turkey, particularly south and west coasts, the Nile Delta Region and the Coastal Maghreb states.

The White-throated kingfisher – Halcyon smyrnensis – also called the white-breasted kingfisher is a tree kingfisher, of Type – sallyer, Family Alcedinidae and Order Coraciiformes. It is widely resident right across Southern Asia from Southern Iraq along the Northern coast of the Arabian Gulf across the Indian Sub-continent to the coast of Southern China. Separately, it is also resident along the Levantine coasts from Southern Turkey to Alexandria in Egypt.

The Grey-headed kingfisher – Halcyon leucocephala – is a Tree kingfisher of Type – sallyer, Family Alcedinidae and Order Coraciiformes. It is resident across most of sub-Saharan Africa down to Angola except for Somalia and parts of Eastern Ethiopia. It has a Southerly breeding range across Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It also has breeding range along the coasts of the SW Corner of the Arabian Peninsular from Southern Saudi Arabia, along the coasts of the Yemen just into the Dhofar Region of Oman.

The Collared Kingfisher – Todiramphus chloris – is Tree Kingfisher, of Type sallyer, Family Alcedinidae and Order Coraciiformes, that is widely present across Asia and in to NE Africa. Its main range is across SE Asia, the Islands of Indonesia, and the Northern coasts of Australia. However in the AWB Region it is found along the southern coasts of the Red Sea and also at one isolated mangrove forest on the UAE/Oman coastline of the Gulf of Oman at Khor Kalba.

Pied kingfisher – Ceryle rudis – is a fairly large water kingfisher of Type – sallyer, the Family Alcedinidae, and the Order Coraciiformes. It is widely distributed across sub Saharan Africa and Southern Asia and more sparingly across Southern Turkey, The Levant, Syria, Iraq and into SW Iran. It is largely resident with only short seasonal movements.
